Resultats des etudes socio-economiques et de la consommation d'eau potable dans les trois grands villages Mokko, Dogon Kiria et Kore Mairoua

The Village Water Supply Programme (PHV) of Dosso, Niger, executed socio-economic and water consumption studies in three major villages in Niger; Mokko, Dogon Kiria and Kore Mairoua, in preparation for a new water supply project involving the mini-AEP. The mini-AEP is a small water supply system consisting of a deep well, submersible pump generally powered by a diesel motor, one or more small storage tanks, and several public taps. The water consumption study was to gather information for baseline data for the system capacity. The socio-economic study was to aid in the formulation of the village support organization for the mini-AEP, determine the best technique for the target villages, and to facilitate development of consumer awareness programmes during installation and monitoring and evaluation programmes after installation. The target population for these studies was the women, who were primarily responsible for household, and often irrigation, water acquisition. It was found that the water consumption varied by season. Conflicts as to priorities, pumped versus drawn water, and price subsidies are discussed. Examples of the routine questionnaires are given in the Appendix.
