The training module covers rural and urban issues, sanitation and water supply, water resources management and cross-cutting (e.g. gender and equity) issues. It also takes a wider approach to managing sources of uncertainty and risk in the WASH sector – of which climate change is one – and the approaches and tools introduced have potentially wide applicability.

The training module is intended to be used in the delivery of short courses (about 40 hours duration) for WASH professionals (particularly at state and local government levels in the planning and design of water and sanitation projects and programmes, and the delivery of water and sanitation services) helping participants to find practical entry points to address climate change risks in their own work. Participants may be drawn from Ministries, state water supply agencies, WASH units, RBDAs and other related agencies. Specific learning objectives of the envisaged training courses are that participants will gain 1) a thorough understanding of all aspects of climate change, 2) understand how mainstreaming provides a way for the WASH sector to engage and effectively meet the challenges presented by climate change, and 3) be able to adapt scenario-based planning, water safety planning and other tools in order to address climate change and other sources of risk and uncertainty in WASH.

Training-of-trainers workshop

The training-of-trainers workshop is intended for organisations and individuals that are planning or considering the development of training activities in WASH and climate change adaptation. This includes staff from the National Water Resources Institute (Kaduna) which plans to run training courses in WASH and climate change adaptation in the future. The workshop will also be of interest to participants from the federal and policy levels (such as FME, MoWR, MoH, UNICEF etc) and specifically staff that are interested in supporting subsequent capacity development on climate change in WASH for their organisations, partners and programmes. Staff working in universities, consultants and NGOs that may be involved in future in delivering such training courses are also welcome.

The workshop assumes that participants have some familiarity with climate change issues, and most are likely to have specific roles linking to climate change adaptation, planning or capacity development within their organisations.

As trainers, you will later be leading sessions to build and strengthen capacity in assessing vulnerability to climate change and formulating adaptation strategies in WASH sector. This training workshop aims to help you place the problem in its context and guide you in your use of the training materials that have been prepared.

The specific objectives of the trainers-of-training workshop are that participants:

  1. are familiar with some of the latest resources available to support WASH and climate change adaptation training
  2. equipped to use the available resources with exercises and examples to design and deliver effective training courses
  3. give feedback on the draft training module to support its finalisation
  4. generate ideas and commitments for future capacity building activities over the next two years
