Abstract

A baseline environmental health survey was carried out in Rada'a, Yemen, in conjunction with the ongoing implementation of the Rada'a Water Supply and Sanitation Project (RWSSP). The survey was done in 339 households randomly chosen from 12 urban districts in Rada'a. It was biased in favor of female participants since the house was chosen as the unit of reference, and male/female roles in Yemen are well-defined. The survey was to determine the level of education, general and hygienic, of the population, level of awareness of the RWSSP and its implications, willingness to pay for the project, present cultural practices concerning personal hygiene, household cleanliness and garbage disposal, and the present state of health of family members. According to the study, most families are in favor of the project and willing to pay for it. Interview teams consisted of local people, men to interview men and women for women, trained in a two-day workshop. Sensitive questions over income were deleted or left until the end of the interview. The questionnaire, training methods, terms of reference for the project, and other pertinent information are included in the appendix.
