Abstract

Several pump types used for manual irrigation were tested for flow rate, daily capacity (amount of water lifted in 8 hours), and ease of operation at well depths ranging from 2.5 to 7 metres. The tests were carried out between November 1995 and May 1996, as part of the Netherlands-funded North Bengal Terai Development Project in India. The pumps tested included a handpump (cast iron lever type, Mo. 6), several types of pedal pump (both bamboo and iron models), and bamboo bucket pumps (spring lever and counter-balance models). An average-size male, female and child were chosen as test persons. It was concluded that pedal pumps followed by the counter balance bucket system were the most efficient technologies for irrigation. If the pumps are also to be used for drinking water provision, the handpump is the preferred option.
