| Abstract | The development of small-scale water resources is crucial for rural agricultural areas in developing countries which are not reached by irrigation networks and drinking water utilities. The International Symposium on the Development of Small-scale Water Resources in Rural Areas, held in May 1990 in Thailand, convened representatives of various organizations and agencies and other professionals worldwide who are actively involved in small-scale water resources development. This publication documents the papers and posters presented during the Symposium, a forum for: discussion of relevant examples of innovative small-scale water resources development projects / programmes; analysis of universal problems and bottlenecks as well as practical solutions to these; definition of possible paradigms of development which can guide future project planning, implementation and management; and, most of all, fostering the exchange of information and experiences among participants. The two main themes of the Symposium were: technology and management innovations, and pitfalls and how to deal with them. The publication consists of the following six parts; namely, introduction and keynote speeches; management approaches and strategies (used in Asia, Africa and America); technologies, tools and training; case studies of four countries in Africa and Asia; abstracts of selected poster presentations; and Symposium recommendations including an emphasis in all phases of project realization on community participation in which women share equally. |
