Abstract

In the rural water supply projects carried out under Italian development aid, social activities have been incorporated to stimulate communication and the participation of the project beneficiaries, and to strengthen the people's capacity in managing and maintaining the water system. In this paper these social activities are described: (1) the preliminary social enquiry to generate the data needed to define a project well adapted to the site and the socio-economic, cultural, technical and environmental circumstances and as precisely responsive as possible to the recipients' needs; (2) the social activities programme inserted within the executive project, focusing on the dissemination of information, communication and training activities specified according to rhe roles, tasks and aims envisaged within a project for groups and individuals; and (3) the participation of the beneficiaries in the evaluation of the initiatives implemented and the results achieved to effect constant modifications and checks of action methods, to reinforce successes and to intervene to correct obvious errors.
