Abstract

This article describes the effect of the enormous growth in the tanning industry in Tamil Nadu, India. Attention is paid in particular to the effects of tannery wastewaters on the region's groundwater in the context of the drinking water shortage, health hazards, and the effects on agriculture and livestock. The social and economic aspects of the tanning industry are discussed, together with legislation aimed at controlling pollution.
