Abstract

This report is a review of the present situation on the urban slums in Tanzania. The service status of water supply, sanitation, refuse collection, urban drainage and access roads is assessed in view of possible improvements.\AB The report covers the following towns: Arusha, Dar es Salaam, Mbeya, Morogoro, Mwanza, Tabora and Tanga. These centres were selected as they were already earmarked for upgrading programmes in the past. Design criteria and\AB standards are also reviewed as their suitability to the local needs. A case study of the Tindiga settlement, a slum area in Arusha town, is presented to illustrate the upgrading process.
