Abstract

This report is based on a two-day workshop held in June 1998. Part I, The Need for Integrated Research Approaches in Social and Economic Development, contains three chapters describing the evolution of interest in and the potential benefits of integrated research. The main qualitative methods are described and the importance of integrated approaches in gender analysis is discussed. Part II, Lessons from the Field, contains seven chapters presenting case studies on how integrated approaches have been used in poverty analysis (chapters 4 and 5), education (chapters 6 and 7), and health, water supply, and sanitation (chapters 8 to 10). Chapter 11 describes the use of mixed-method approaches by UNICEF.
