Abstract

The guidebook explains technical requirements for efficient treatment of wastewater in locations with a special geographic focus in developing countries. DEWATS is designed to be an element of a comprehensive strategy for city-wide planning and sustainable infrastructure development. It is dimensioned in such a way that treated water meets requirements stipulated in environmental laws and regulations. It also includes socio-economic conditions and steps for community action planning. The book aims to answer the demand for reliable, efficient and low-cost wastewater treatment systems that is increasing world-wide especially in densely populated urban regions where adequate wastewater treatment systems do not exist and uncontrolled discharge of wastewater endangers environmental health and water resources. The book is aimed at urban service providers, national and local governments, academic institutions, international NGOs and local community-based organizations.
