Abstract

In 2006, the Sub-Commission on the Promotion and Protection of Human Rights adopted the Guidelines for the Realisation of the Right to Drinking Water and Sanitation. The ensuing years saw increased clamour for the recognition of water as a human right, which has now been acknowledged by the United Nations, since 2010. This information sheet describes the theoretical debates that accompanied the struggle for such a recognition, and the continued challenges faced by many to secure the right to water (and sanitation).
