Abstract

This guide introduces a comprehensive framework for global monitoring of the Sustainable Development Goal for water and sanitation (SDG 6). It provides an overview of the SDG 6 targets and proposed indicators for global progress monitoring, which were developed by the Inter-agency and Expert Group on Sustainable Development Goal Indicators (IAEG-SDGs),

The proposed framework aims to integrate three tracking systems:

  • the WHO/UNICEF Joint Monitoring Programme for Water Supply and Sanitation (JMP) covering drinking water, sanitation and hygiene (SDG targets 6.1 and 6.2)
  • Integrated monitoring of water and sanitation related SDG targets - GEMI, for the new targets on wastewater treatment and water quality, water use and use efficiency, integrated water resources management and water-related ecosystems (SDG targets 6.3 to 6.6), and
  • the UN-Water Global Analysis and Assessment of Sanitation and Drinking-Water (GLAAS), which monitors the means of implementation (SDG targets 6.a and 6.b)

While JMP and GLAAS are well established systems, GEMI was only established in 2014. The guide describes how GEMI will be integrated into the SDG 6 monitoring efforts, up to the establishment of a global baseline in 2018.
