Abstract

Tourism-related economic losses from inadequate sanitation in India are estimated to be US$ 266 million. This briefing note is a synthesis of an expert panel discussion on the significance and role of sanitation for tourism, which took place in Goa on February 20, 2018. It discusses the impact of poor water and sanitation services on tourism and local communities, current sanitation practices in popular tourist destinations in India, sanitation methods employed in Indian cities that attract tourists, and possible steps to augment sanitation measures in tourist friendly locations. Panellists concluded that cities that have attracted tourists have been able to do so because of political will, strict monitoring of sanitation norms, and citizen pride in environmental conservation.
