Introducing the WASH Systems Academy

Become a WASH Systems master.

The WASH Systems Academy is a dynamic online platform developed to assist WASH sector professionals in applying a WASH systems strengthening approach. The Academy will help you understand the WASH systems strengthening approach:

  • What is it?
  • How and why was it developed?
  • How to start applying it

If you are at the start of your career or are a senior WASH expert that wants to understand what a systems strengthening approach entails and how you can integrate it in your work, this free online course is for you. The WASH Systems Academy will be available from September 2019.

Interactive platform

The WASH Systems Academy is an interactive platform. Follow any course on your phone, through our app, or on your computer.

You can use the academy to learn from and engage with others working with WASH. You can share your views and experiences in all courses.

The activities in each course are different, but expect to:

  • hear (podcasts)
  • see (animations, infographics or videos)
  • connect (with other WASH sector professionals and IRC in forum discussions)
  • do (exercises, quizzes)
  • read (short texts) and
  • create (your own materials).

Monitor your progress

Every time you complete an activity such as listening to a podcast, watching an animation or taking a quiz, you will receive credits and badges (see below). The course ends with a multiple-choice test. If you complete all the activities in all the sessions and get 80% or more right in the test, you can download a digital certificate to add to your LinkedIn or Facebook profile.

However, the learning does not have to stop there. You can expand your knowledge by using the extra materials in each module. They include videos, fact sheets, working papers, briefing notes, tools and training materials for face-to-face training. All these resources can be downloaded.

The certificate

The course ends with a multiple-choice test. If you complete all activities in all sessions and get 80% on the test, you can download a digital certificate to add to your LinkedIn or Facebook profile.

Resources required

Resources required for participants are:

  • Internet connection
  • Computer (or smart phone) with an option to hear sound 

Available courses

The WASH Systems Academy has a general course ‘WASH system strengthening: the basics’ and several specialist courses. Once you pass the general course, you can choose any specialist course.

The general course takes on average 16 hours:

  • Duration: 16 hours for completion within 2 weeks
  • Content: water, sanitation and hygiene
  • Availability: several times a year starting from September

At the end of the general course, you will understand the basics of the WASH systems strengthening approach.

The general course 'WASH systems strengthening: the basics' contains the following sessions:

Session 1: Introducing the WASH Systems Academy
Session 2: From broken pumps to lasting systems
Session 3: What is WASH systems strengthening?
Session 4: WASH is a service
Session 5: Sanitation systems strengthening
Session 6: Hygiene promotion for WASH systems strengthening
Session 7: WASH systems strengthening away from the home
Session 8: Leaving no one behind
Session 9: The road map to sustainable services
Session 10: Test your knowledge & earn a certificate

Specialist courses

Each specialist course covers one element of the WASH systems strengthening approach in detail. Each course takes at least 16 hours and can be completed within 2 weeks.

The learning objectives of the specialist courses are to prepare you to:

  • Apply the WASH systems strengthening approach in your own work
  • Support others to apply the WASH systems strengthening approach

The following specialist courses will be made available in 2019:

  • The building blocks of sustainable WASH Systems (September 2019)

You can also partner with IRC to develop specialist courses from June, for example on:

  • Monitoring for sustainability
  • Sustainable WASH Financing
  • Sanitation system strengthening
  • Asset management
  • What a waste – from waste to energy
  • Advocating for SDG 6
  • Learning and adaptation for system strengthening
  • Leaving no one behind: equal access to WASH services

Join us

Delivering water and sanitation services that last relies on a complex network of people and factors to work together effectively. In other words, it needs a strong WASH system in place. Strong WASH systems can only be built together.

Registration for the basic course will begin in September. Partners of the Hilton Foundation and Agenda for Change (A4C) are welcome to test a Beta version of the Academy from June.
