Asunafo North Municipal Assembly, Asunafo South District Assembly and Tano North District Assembly together with major development partners and stakeholders have developed their respective 7-year (2023- 2030) WASH master plans to drive district-wide access to WASH services in Ghana.

The provision of safe water, sanitation, and hygiene (WASH) services is generally considered essential to improving people’s quality of life, socio-economic development and public health outcomes. Ghana has an enormous endowment of water resources which provide for the necessities of life and socio-economic development.
Despite improvements in access to water services, many people do not enjoy safe, reliable, and affordable water services. A significant number of the population also do not have access to improved sanitation, especially in rural communities.
In the Ahafo region, IRC worked with Asutifi North District Assembly, in collaboration with other partners, to prepare and implement a 13-year WASH Master Plan (2017-2030) under the Asutifi North Ahonidie Mpontuo (ANAM) initiative. Over the period, with funding from the Conrad N. Hilton Foundation, this initiative demonstrated the capability of local authority-led partnership with NGOs to drive district-wide access to WASH services toward achieving universal coverage and SDG 6.
Following the improved good practices and successful innovations of the district-based approach to universal WASH services in Asutifi North District, IRC with a renewal grant from the Conrad N. Hilton Foundation is expanding to three of the remaining five districts in the region - Asunafo North Municipal Assembly, Asunafo South and Tano North District Assemblies of the Ahafo Region from January 2022- December 2024.
Under the renewed initiative, the Asunafo North Municipal Assembly, Asunafo South District Assembly and Tano North District Assembly together with major development partners and stakeholders have developed their respective 7-year (2023- 2030) WASH master plans termed, Asunafo North Ahonidie, Nsupa, Asetenapa Dwumadie (ANANAD) initiative; Asunafo South Nsupa ne Ahoteɛ Nkosoɔ (ASNAN); and Tano North Ahonidie Dwumadie (TNAD) initiative.
These WASH master plans are informed by guidelines of the National Development Planning Commission of Ghana and framed within the targets of United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goal 6. Each of these plans provides a framework for coordinating and aligning efforts of all actors towards achieving the stated goals and visions for WASH in the municipal and district assemblies.
The process of developing the plans were participatory. It involved stakeholders at local, regional and national levels. The National Development Planning Commission, Ahafo Regional Coordinating Council (AhRCC), IRC, Safe Water Network, World Vision International, Community Water and Sanitation Agency, chiefs, and the respective Assemblies played various roles in preparing the documents. The plan preparation process was completed within a year (January to December 2022) and approved by the respective general assemblies.
These plans are transformative opportunities to harness the potentials of the assemblies and foster partnerships to drive the change needed to meeting SDG 6 in the three districts whereby all citizens would have access to sustainably managed water, sanitation and hygiene services by 2030, which are fundamental to a better human life and productivity.
