Abstract

Three geographical regions of Mali were studied to provide insight into their hygienic practices, both at home and at water stations, the cost of water, and the social customs surrounding water usage. The main water sources were rivers, lakes and wells; both traditional and modern. It was found that most of the population was satisfied with the water as long as it tasted agreeable, was clear, and made soap foam. If it did not meet this criteria, it was often used for brickmaking or gardening. Some wells in villages known to be badly affected by drought were not used because of their placement in a 'bad' place. Hygienic practices differed somewhat by ethnic group, but it was found that the Islam religion had instilled certain hygienic habits in its followers. Water costs were high when compared to the average income of the villager.
