Abstract

A new method for bacteriological water analysis, named the "Milliva" method, was developed in Niger, and adapted for widespread use in Africa. The method is for field technicians involved in epidemiological studies and water quality evaluations. Four bacterial indicators are used; total coliforms, fecal coliforms, fecal Streptococci and sulphide-reducing Clostridia. Previous methods included doubling dilutions and cellulose membrane filtration. The Milliva method is also a filtration method, but uses a sterile, portable, disposable Millipore filter through which 100 milliliters of sample water is passed. The membrane is then placed on a nutrient medium and allowed to incubate at a slightly higher temperature than normal (44.5 C). Since all equipment used is portable and disposable, the chance of false results from transporting water samples long distances is lessened. The Appendix specifies equipment and procedures used.
