Abstract

Water scarcity in the Middle East and Northern Africa is seriously impeding economic growth and development. Since many of these countries share rivers, the undependable yearly quantity of water creates political tensions, especially for downstream irrigation projects. Large rivers such as the Nile, Euphrates, Tigris, and Niger are becoming increasingly polluted, while pollution legislation lags behind. Intensified groundwater abstraction leads in some cases to groundwater mining. Water balances and water budgets for several of the countries involved are outlined, including surface and groundwater resources, present and estimated future population densities, and present and estimated future water use for agriculture and industry.
