Abstract

Representatives from 45 African countries and 33 external support agencies and NGO's met in Abidjan on May 7-11, 1990, for the All Africa Rural Water Supply and Sanitation Workshop and Water Supply and Sanitation Sector Conference. The combined conference and workshop were organized to address the continent-wide water and sanitation system concerns realized during the International Drinking Water Supply and Sanitation Decade. The workshop (May 7,8,9,) was a forum for the formulation of the Guidelines for the Development of Country Strategies for the 1990's (The Abidjan Accord); and was composed of five Working Groups delegated by region to cover topics such as the role of communities and women in water supply and sanitation, available technologies, financial management, administration and institutional issues. The proceedings of the workshop and ensuing conference are presented in Volume 1, with individual reports of all working groups in the Annexes. Volume 2 is a compendium of individual reports from 40 of the participating countries over their present situation and future needs. Fourteen papers by external support agencies, among them IRC, are included, verifying their areas of interest and involvement.
